STUDENT INTERVIEWS WITH THE CLASS OF 2021

The Burbank Arts & Education Foundation is proud to highlight students in the CLASS OF 2021 who have been part of the robust STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs in the Burbank Unified School District classrooms. We hope you enjoy reading about their experiences and getting to know them as we celebrate an important milestone in their lives: high school graduation.

Today, we present to you Delanie Finnigan, who attends Burbank High School and participated in their Choir program. Delanie will be attending the University of Toronto and majoring in biochemistry.

“Music speaks in a way words can’t.”

- Delanie Finnigan

My name is Delanie Finnigan, I am 17 years old, and I attend Burbank High School.

What science or math experiences in BUSD impacted your future goals?
In the 10th grade I took Honors Chemistry. Throughout the year, I realized I had a passion for chemistry. The subject came naturally to me and it was fascinating to see how the world worked through stoichiometry, gas laws, and the periodic table. My sophomore year was a defining moment for me and taught me what I wanted to do in the future had to have chemistry in it. That year was a keystone that defined my desire to be a pharmaceutical researcher.  My musical background supports my pursuit of science as music taught me patience, perseverance, and self-sacrifice. These are important lessons that are applicable in the laboratory and research. Experiments consist of trial and error, but the key is patience and perseverance.

Through what artistic medium(s) do you most like to use to express yourself?
I have a passion expressing myself through music. Whether it’s through singing in show choir or classical guitar, music speaks in a way words can’t.

Describe your first experience with the arts while in the Burbank Unified Schools?
My first experience with the arts was Jefferson choir and music class with Mrs. McGuire. She taught me how exhilarating performing can be and exposed me to live vocal performance. I learned how to work with others as a team, use self-control, and listen in order to excel. My mom created my foundation for musical appreciation; however, Mrs. McGuire’s passion, creativity, and patience shaped my appreciation.

What art experience in the schools are you most proud of and how did it impact you?
The art experience I am most proud of is choir, specifically Pop Show. It was rewarding to perform a set we practiced for months. The stress of rehearsal hours on weekends and late nights came together when everyone in choir performed our best. It meant so much to me to perform with my closest friends and do something we all loved. It was one of the hardest things for me to lose this year. In addition to performing the set, we had the opportunity to showcase individual acts. This performance was a moment I’ll always value and cherish.

Vocal arts, specifically show choir, changed my life and taught me so much more than simply singing. Joining choir taught me life lessons, introduced friendships, and gave me a moment to stand in the spotlight. Since freshman year, I have never regretted joining show choir. The memories I have made defined high school for me and I recommend joining it to everyone. There is a place for all in show choir.

What advice do you have for younger students?
I learned to take advantage of opportunities. It may seem like a lot of work but searching for new opportunities and learning new subjects will open doors for you. My passion in chemistry led to a research internship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. I would tell younger students to take advantage of teachers’ knowledge and guidance, go in at lunch and get to know them, and study hard because it is so valuable to be knowledgeable in a variety of subjects.

Please share your plans for your future after graduation.
In the fall, I will be attending the University of Toronto and majoring in biochemistry.
